The Mermaid Pendant
This sterling and azurite pendant is a reproduction of a design by William Spratling and it measures about 1.75″ across. The legend is that after a week of eating and drinking at Paco’s Bar in Taxco, Mexico, Spratling and his young friend, the artist Diego Rivera, had no money to pay the tab. Bill convinced the owner of Paco’s to let Rivera paint a mural on the wall in return for the bar tab. He said “This guy is a great artist and one day he will be famous!” Rivera painted the mermaid mural, went on to become one of the foremost muralists of his time, and Spratling interpreted the design in sterling silver. It may be worn on a variety of chains, round, or flat. It is shown on a simple round omega chain (not included).
